The Scrub Innovation You Didn’t Know You Needed

The Beginning
Jessica, the founder of Copper Medical, is a dedicated registered nurse based in Toronto, Canada. Her journey into healthcare was driven by a deep love for helping others and a passion for science. Throughout her career, she’s been privileged to witness the most intimate moments of her patients' lives-experiences that have shaped her both personally and professionally. She’s seen life and death unfold before her eyes, with some moments more painful than others, but each one reinforced her commitment to caring for others.

The Idea
In 2017, as Jessica began studying to become an Intensive Care Nurse, she discovered something that would change her professional path. She came across athletic clothing infused with copper, marketed as antibacterial and odour-resistant. This sparked an idea:copper-infused scrubs for healthcare workers. She realized that healthcare professionals, who are constantly in contact with bacteria and bodily fluids, are at high risk of contracting and spreading hospital-acquired infections. What seemed like an obvious solution-copper-infused scrubs-wasn't yet available. That was the moment when the vision for Copper Medical began to take shape.

The Decision
Like many entrepreneurs, Jessica faced a lot of fear and uncertainty. The path ahead was unclear, filled with questions she didn’t have answers to. But instead of shying away, she embraced the challenge. Jessica took business courses at the University of Toronto, part of their entrepreneurial certificate program, which gave her the essential knowledge and tools to bring her idea to life. It was here that she began to see the potential to not only create a product but to change the healthcare industry for the better.

The Dream
Through her courses and personal experiences, Jessica developed a bold dream:A world where hospital-acquired infections are significantly reduced. A world where healthcare workers no longer face unnecessary risks, where the fourth leading cause of death-something so preventable-would be a thing of the past. A dream where billions of healthcare dollars spent on treating infections could instead be used to improve patient care. This was the vision that fueled her journey and continues to inspire Copper Medical.

The Vision
At Copper Medical, Jessica's belief is simple:Copper Medical was going to save lives. She saw it clearly then, and she sees it even more strongly now. By infusing copper into scrubs, Copper Medical is helping to protect healthcare workers and patients alike from the dangers of hospital-acquired infections. This is just the beginning of the change she envisions-a healthier, safer future for healthcare professionals around the world.
